James M. Poindexter Jr., MD, FACS, RPVI has unparalleled experience in the field of vascular surgery. After receiving his undergraduate degree from Northwestern University in his home state of Illinois, Dr. Poindexter completed his medical degree at Washington University Medical School in St. Louis, Missouri. He served as a surgical intern at Louisiana State University Hospital and completed a residency at Methodist Hospitals of Dallas before becoming surgical and chief resident at the University of Connecticut. He completed his vascular surgery fellowship training at New York Medical College. He then served first as an Assistant Professor and then as Associate Professor of Surgery at the Morehouse School of Medicine, providing clinical instruction to Morehouse and Emory University residents at Grady Memorial Hospital.
Board-Certified in surgery and licensed in both Georgia and Missouri, Dr. Poindexter's focus on vascular surgery and treatment began when he opened his private clinical practice in Atlanta, Georgia in 1989. Dr. Poindexter's Non-Invasive Vascular Laboratory was one of the first to receive full accreditation by the Intersocietal Commission on the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories. It is regularly used in the clinical evaluation of vascular conditions. Dr. Poindexter continues to serve as an attending vascular surgeon at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta.
From January of 2009 until December 2010, he served as Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Atlanta Medical Center. At one point, he served Chief of Vascular Surgery and Vascular Residency Training at Atlanta Medical Center. He is also the founder, co-owner and Medical Director of The Premier HealthCare Network, LLC. In addition to his extensive medical training, Dr. Poindexter attended the Group Practice Governance Leadership Institute, Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University and the American College of Medical Practice Executives.
Dr. Poindexter has been recognized for his professional acumen with numerous awards, among them the J.P. Wilson Surgical Attending of the Year Award from the Atlanta Medical Center and the Georgia Baptist Medical Center. He holds membership in an array of professional organizations, including the Society of Vascular Surgery, the Atlanta Vascular Society, the American College of Surgeons, the Atlanta Medical Association, the Medical Association of Georgia and Atlanta, the National Medical Association, the Peripheral Vascular Society, the Society of Black Academic Surgeons, the Society of Vascular Technology, the Southern Medical Association, the International College of Surgeons, and the International Society for Endovascular Surgery. He is a nominee for the American College of Medical Practice Executives and is a member of the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA).
Walaya Methodius-Rayford, MD, RPVI, CWSP received her bachelor’s degree from Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. She then obtained her Master of Science in Medical Science from Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, IN, before completing her medical degree at the same institution.
She served as a surgical resident then chief resident at Atlanta Medical Center, Atlanta, GA where she also completed her vascular surgery fellowship training. After joining Georgia Vascular Specialists, PC in 2011, Dr. Methodius-Rayford became a certified physician in Vascular Ultrasound. In 2014 she became a certified diplomat to the American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine. In addition to training in hyperbaric medicine, Dr. Methodius is also a certified wound specialist physician (CWSP), a member of an elite group of healthcare professionals involved in wound management.
Dr. Methodius is the founder of Women in Surgery, a society committed to fostering support and assuagement amongst peers in medicine. Dr. Methodius holds membership in a range of professional organizations, including the Society of Vascular Surgery, the Atlanta Medical Association, the Peripheral Vascular Society, and American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Vascular & Endovascular Surgery Society, and the American Venous Forum. Dr. Methodius has been featured in numerous magazines including, O Magazine, Good Housekeeping, Entrepreneur, and Women's Health. For three years she has served on the diversity committee for the Society of Vascular Surgery.
Haley Wood graduated from Georgia Northwestern Technical College in 2005, where with excellence she earned an Associate’s Degree in Science in Vascular Technology.
Haley is an experienced Registered Vascular Technologist in the office and hospital settings, with more than 18 years of outstanding work. She currently serves as the Vascular Lab Technical Director at Georgia Vascular Specialists, PC.
Michael graduated from Georgia Northwestern Technical College in 2015 as a Registered Vascular Ultrasound Technologist. While working on his degree at Georgia Northwestern Michael participated in clinical studies at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, GA and also at Emory Hospital Midtown in Atlanta, GA.
After graduating and receiving his degree in Applied Science from Georgia Northwestern College he went on to be employed by Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, GA. His experience also included time spent at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta GA.
Michael has been an indispensable and passionate member of the GVS team since January 2019. His commitment to providing a high patient quality of care has helped GVS consistently deliver on positive patient outcomes.
We pride ourselves on having in-house, nurses, medical assistants, and surgical techs that have undergone extensive training and certification. Our patients will receive individualized care from a compassionate team. The GVS outpatient team works closely with our vascular surgeons to assists in the minimally invasive procedures that take place in our office.
Gloris Powell has over 30 years of healthcare experience and has been an intricate part of the GVS family for 7 years. Gloris earned her medical assistant certification from Draughons College of Atlanta and her associates degree from Brown Mackee College.
In addition to her broad spectrum of medical experience and wonderful rapport with our patients, she is Max Pulse Certified by The Cardio Group.
A Southwest Atlanta native, James Hill graduated from Benjamin E. Mays High School and studied Business at Georgia Southern University. He obtained his medical assistant certification at Malix Institute where he majored in Biology at Atlanta Metropolitan State College.
Since 2007 James has worked as a medical assistant and even traveled to countries in Africa and South America for medical relief missions. His love for life and helping others is beyond reproach. He uses his personable and empathetic nature to achieve optimal patient care.
